The corners where the head curtain meets the side pads take the most concentrated wear, with truck weight constantly shifting around during the loading or unloading process.

That’s before weather enters the picture. UV exposure, rain, dirt grinding into the pad face, moisture collecting in folds, and sub-freezing temperatures each attack the fabric through different mechanisms.

ABRASION RESISTANCE

How well the surface coating holds up under repeated contact. is important, but it doesn’t capture every field condition a dock seal faces. Evaluate it alongside other factors and how they work together to prevent fabric failure.

ADHESION

The PVC coating must stay bonded to the yarn during flex and compression cycles. If adhesion fails, the coating separates and peels away, exposing the base fabric and accelerating wear dramatically. 

COLD-FLEX PERFORMANCE

Determines whether the fabric can compress and bend without cracking in cold temperatures. The standard test is ASTM D2136, a low-temperature bend test for coated fabrics. This matters for any refrigerated dock, cold storage facility, or cold climate installation.

FIRE RETARDANT (FR)

FR compliance is required in some jurisdictions and facilties. When it’s needed, NFPA-701 is the standard.  Check with your building code AHJ and the facility’s insurance carrier.

What fabric is used for loading dock seals?

Loading dock seals are typically covered with PVC coated over polyester fabric, also called vinyl coated polyester. The PVC coating provides abrasion and moisture resistance while the polyester base (combined with yarn weave pattern) provides tear strength, stress force, and flex durability.

Your foam bonding process is dependent on the vinyl’s coating-to-yarn bond. If the coating separates under flex, the foam bonding fails from inside out, even if tear strength tests pass. Ask your supplier: What adhesion testing do they perform? Are they testing liquid polyurethane adhesive bonding, not just generic adhesion metrics?

The standard test bends the fabric at a specified low temperature to see if it cracks. But the result is pass/fail at one temperature. Your dock may hit -20°F, not -40°F. Ask your supplier: What temperature does their dock seal fabric pass ASTM D2136 at? How will it handle the actual climate where your customers operate?

You promise customers that replacement pads match the original seal. If FR and non-FR versions drift even slightly in dye lot, the partial replacement looks two-toned. Ask your supplier: Can they guarantee color match? Do they maintain dye consistency across both product lines?

Abrasion testing measures lab conditions, not the combined stress of compression, corner rub, and misalignment. A fabric that passes abrasion performance testing can still fail at seams and corners in warehouse facilities. Ask your supplier: What do they see fail first in loading docks?
