To better understand how base fabrics fit into the overall composition of the end vinyl product, it is important to understand the basic terminology. Understanding base fabric terminology will help you determine the exact vinyl product that will best fit your application requirements.
First there is the type of yarn that can be used for the base fabric. Polyester is the most commonly used yarn material in our vinyl fabrics. Nylon can also be used but is not as common as polyester. Nylon and polyester are both synthetic fabrics, but nylon production is more expensive, which results in a higher price for the consumer.
The term, Denier represents the unit of measure to weigh the mass of the yarn. Results usually come down to one conclusion: the higher the weight the stronger the yarn. Denier values range from 150 up to 1500 denier and 1 denier = 1 gram per 9000 linear meters.
Base Fabric Count is a term that represents the number of yarns in the weft direction by the number of yarns in the warp direction along with the denier of yarn in the weft direction by the denier of yarn in the warp direction. These counts are within 1 square inch. An example of this is 10 x 12 by 250 x 500. While the yarn count is a measurement of the number of yarns in a given area – that is, how tightly woven the yarns are – the fabric density is another measurement indicating how much fiber is in a square inch, thereby allowing us to determine how strong and thick a fabric is.
Additionally, there are several different types of yarns. Flat Yarns are organized in a flat configuration which is primarily used to accomplish a smooth surface. Round Yarns are organized in a round configuration which increases tensile and tear strength. High Twist Yarns are spun in a round configuration and then twisted, resulting with an increased tensile and tear strength above and beyond that of a round yarn. Anti-Wicking Yarns are treated with an anti-wicking agent that will help resist moisture absorption in the yarns. This helps to eliminate mildew and is ideal for fabrics used in high moisture areas.
